Had breakfast with Mothership.sg’s founder Lien We King, one of the first friends I made back in secondary school. A former fund manager and trained DJ, We King is an accidental mediapreneur. Meant to be a hobby site, Mothership started with a bang (more like a crash). It’s first article in Aug 2013 – ‘48 reasons why you still feel for Singapore’ – was shared so widely that it crashed the servers for a couple of hours. Over the years, it has powered ahead to be the top 3 news sites in Singapore (behind CNA and ST), with 5m unique users and 30m page views monthly. For a site that started out as a ‘joke that went too far’, it is now one serious business.
