He’s got my back!

Apr 8, 2025

Those from my generation will remember the pre-smartphone era – when phones came with plastic number keypads. Memtech International was a key manufacturer of those components. The company grew rapidly, and founder Chuang Wenfu listed it on the SGX in 2004, just four years after it was established.

However, with the rise of smartphones, keypads became obsolete, and the company faced significant losses. Mr. Chuang and his son, Tze Mon, quickly reinvented Memtech, pivoting to produce components for new clients like Tesla and Apple.

In 2019, Mr. Chuang privatised the company in partnership with USI, a subsidiary of Taiwanese manufacturing giant ASE, valuing it at almost S$200m.

I’ve known Mr. Chuang since Memtech’s IPO, and he was one of my earliest investors. Grateful for his support all these years – he’s had my back! (Quite literally in this photo)
