It all started with a big bang

Terence Wong’s career in the stock market was inspired by the Black Monday crash in 1987. It was barely a few weeks away from the national exams and anything that can distract his parents from making him study for his PSLE must be worth exploring, he thought.

Thankfully, his chosen career path is nowhere as tumultuous as the ’87 market meltdown. He was voted as Best Country Analyst by global fund managers, starred as a judge in the first stock challenge on TV, and managed Singapore’s largest independent research company.

He founded Azure Capital in 2015, after 12 years as research head in RHB Investment Bank (formerly known as OSK-DMG) and SIAS Research.

At RHB, Terence built up a team of young analysts who punched above their weights. His team was named the top research house in the Starmine Analyst Awards. In the Asiamoney Brokers’ Poll, RHB was consistently ranked #1 for small cap research. It also boasted three of the top 10 analysts in Singapore, led by Terence at #1.

Before RHB, he was the CEO and Chief Investment Analyst of SIAS Research. He developed the products at the independent equity research outfit, which grew to be the largest in Singapore within three years of inception.

Terence has been actively sharing his views with the media, appearing on TV over 200 times and has regular slots on radio. He has spoken to over 40,000 investors in more than 200 seminars regionally. An avid volunteer, he helps with the underprivileged and the elderly. He is one of the few Singaporeans known to have completed a 24-hour volunteer marathon.

Terence graduated with Joint Honours in Finance and Economics from Simon Fraser University in Canada. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charter holder.

Comm Chest Chair Can’t Sit Still

Congrats Chew Sutat and Community Chest team for raising $16.7m last night! I recall having coffee with Sutat on his last day as Senior Managing Director at SGX in 2021. I could have sworn he told me that he was going to take it easy. Two years on, this hardly seems the case. Other than … Read more

Turning Around… Almost

Melvin Ang, chairman of entertainment company mm2 Asia, went through some really tough times. Covid affected all of mm2’s business lines – film production, concert and cinema. It bled the most with cinema, having spent almost S$200m on Cathay in 2017, only to see the valuation slide more than half. It is in the midst … Read more

Being Schooled On Roads

Tagged along a group of promising students from Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) to visit Samwoh Group, a well-known name in civil engineering and infrastructure construction. Many roads that we ride on, including the Marina Coastal Expressway (Singapore’s costliest) and the F1 circuit, were built by Samwoh. We never knew so much science goes into paving … Read more
