CNY House Visit – Jean Yip

Jan 29, 2020

Visited the uber-hospitable Jean Yip during CNY with my family. She and hubby Mervin Wee built a wellness empire that is well documented. From a single shop in Katong Plaza back in the early 1980s, they now have close to 80 hairdressing and beauty outlets. These include the Cheryl W chain, which is run by their actress daughter Cheryl.

Mention ‘Jean Yip’ and most people will identify with hairdressing. But the group has also grown through properties the past two decades – a passion of Jean’s since she was a child. Her brother Oliver has been spearheading this division, focusing on redeveloping freehold landed properties in prime districts. The group also holds a string of shophouses, which have seen record prices in recent years.

While Jean Yip Group has done well, what really leaves an impression is how close the family is. Other than Oliver, Jean has also roped in her sisters Pai Hong and Dawn (lady in yellow; one of the hottest singers in the 1980s), as well as brother Paul to take on key roles in the business. They work, travel and eat together. Mervin and Jean just celebrated their 34th wedding anniversary in Japan – with her siblings in tow.

Call that sibling revelry. Who says family and business don’t mix?
