I was asked by Straits Times and Zaobao for comments on SPH’s EGM results. It was unsurprising that an overwhelming majority voted for the hiving off of the media business.

I believe it is a good move. As traditional media ad spend was declining the past few years, I struggled to see how a company operating in such a regulated industry can balance the quality of the papers with the expectations of analysts. Something’s gotta give.

Now SPH shareholders can look forward to a second EGM towards the end of the year to decide if Keppel is the suitor of choice for SPH’s non-media assets.
